• A Legendary Aviator: Wang Yanzhou is one of the most unique and legendary fighter pilots in modern Chinese history. During World War II, he was trained in the United States and served in the Chinese-American Composite Wing (CACW)—a joint operational unit often associated with the legacy of the Flying Tigers. Flying P-40 and P-51 fighters, he became a flying ace by shooting down multiple Japanese aircraft.

• The Civil War Defection: Following the defeat of Japan, Wang continued his service as a Lieutenant Colonel in the KMT Air Force during the outbreak of the Chinese Civil War (Liberation War). On April 20, 1946, while ferrying an L-5 Sentinel aircraft, he encountered bad weather and mistakenly landed at a Communist-controlled airfield in Hebei province. He was warmly received by the Communists and subsequently chose to defect, joining the newly forming aviation forces of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).
