Character Identification

  • Character Name: British Free Corps Infantryman / Rifleman

Detailed Character Description (This premium building block figure utilizes detailed UV printing to represent a highly specific and historically obscure volunteer unit from the Second World War, complete with unit-specific insignia.)

  • Headgear & Facial Printing:

    • The figure wears a dark grey German Field Cap (Feldmütze), featuring the national eagle insignia (stylized/censored with an orange print) and a tricolor cockade enclosed within an inverted V-shaped chevron (Soutache).

    • The facial print features a stern, determined combat expression with pale blue eyes. It includes a printed brown leather chinstrap securing the cap to the soldier’s head.

  • Torso & Combat Uniform:

    • The torso block depicts a standard-issue field-grey (Feldgrau) combat tunic.

    • Crucial Insignia Detail: Unlike standard German units, the right collar tab features a stylized print of the Three Lions of England (lions passant guardant), which was the official, unique collar insignia designated specifically for the British Free Corps. The left collar tab indicates a standard enlisted rank.

  • Tactical Webbing & Equipment:

    • The chest displays intricate black leather Y-strap suspenders, representing standard German infantry load-bearing equipment.

    • Around the waist, the figure is equipped with worn, brown Kar98k rifle ammunition pouches.

    • Tucked securely into the center of the silver-buckled combat belt is a Model 24 Stielhandgranate (stick grenade), positioned for immediate access in combat.

  • Legs & Footwear:

    • The leg blocks continue the field-grey color of the uniform trousers.

    • The lower legs feature detailed printing of canvas camouflage gaiters (Gamaschen) wrapped securely around the ankles, leading down to standard black low-quarter combat boots printed at the very base.

Historical Background The British Free Corps (Britisches Freikorps or BFC) was an infamous and highly unusual unit of the Waffen-SS during World War II. It was composed entirely of British and Dominion prisoners of war (POWs) who were recruited by Nazi Germany to fight against the Soviet Union on the Eastern Front.

The idea was originally conceived by John Amery, a British fascist, who hoped to create a “Legion of St George” to crusade against Bolshevism. To distinguish these volunteers from regular German troops, Heinrich Himmler authorized specific uniform modifications. The most prominent of these was the replacement of the standard SS lightning-bolt runes on the right collar tab with the Three Lions of England, which is accurately represented on this figure. They were also authorized to wear a Union Jack shield on their sleeve.

Despite heavy propaganda, promises of freedom from POW camps, and access to better food and women, the recruitment effort was a spectacular failure. The vast majority of British POWs fiercely rejected the offer. At its maximum strength, the BFC only mustered about 54 men, rendering it completely useless as a combat formation. The unit saw virtually no real action, and following the collapse of Nazi Germany, its members were captured and faced severe trials for high treason in Britain.
