Historical Background
The 4th Infantry Division, famously known as the “Ivy Division” (a play on the Roman numeral IV), was a tip-of-the-spear unit for the United States Army on the Western Front. They achieved legendary status as the primary seaborne assault force that landed on Utah Beach during the D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944.
In a standard US infantry rifle squad, the grenadier played a vital tactical role. Armed with an M1 Garand rifle fitted with an M7 grenade launcher attachment, the rifle grenadier provided immediate explosive fire support, launching munitions much further and more accurately than a soldier could throw them by hand. Because these munitions were heavy and bulky, grenadiers required specialized load-bearing equipment, reflected in the heavy tactical vest seen on this figure.
