Historical Background
General Tong Linge (1892–1937) was a prominent Chinese military commander and the Deputy Commander of the 29th Route Army. He played a critical role during the initial outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War following the Marco Polo Bridge Incident in July 1937. As Japanese forces launched a massive offensive against the Beiping-Tianjin area, General Tong personally directed the defense from the front lines in the Nanyuan sector. Tragically, he was mortally wounded during heavy combat and aerial bombardment on July 28, 1937. Tong Linge was one of the first high-ranking Chinese generals to die in action during the war, and he became a national hero, posthumously promoted to full General for his ultimate sacrifice in defending his nation.
