Historical Background
General Fang Xianjue (1903–1983) was a prominent military commander of the Republic of China’s National Revolutionary Army. A graduate of the prestigious Whampoa Military Academy, he is most famous for his legendary command of the 10th Corps during the Defense of Hengyang in the summer of 1944. During this brutal 47-day siege, Fang and his vastly outnumbered and under-supplied troops held off a massive Imperial Japanese Army offensive, inflicting devastating casualties on the enemy and severely disrupting the Japanese Operation Ichi-Go. For his extraordinary leadership and the heroic stand of the 10th Corps at Hengyang, General Fang was awarded the Order of Blue Sky and White Sun, the highest military honor of the Republic of China at the time.
