Detailed Character Identification, Description, and Historical Background
Character Identification
Omar Nelson Bradley, the American Army commander who led the U.S. First Army during the Normandy campaign and subsequently commanded the 12th Army Group.
Detailed Character Description
The figure wears a tan printed field uniform and an olive helmet with three yellow stars and a brown front strap. Its lined face, dark outlined jacket details, waistband, brown boots and black, white and red First Army-style sleeve marking distinguish this design. A matching 2×3 printed portrait tile depicts Bradley wearing a three-star helmet and a scarf. The main image shows the complete supplied figure and tile together.
Historical / Thematic Background
Omar Bradley rose to senior field command during the Second World War after a career that included infantry service, teaching and staff appointments. In 1943 he commanded II Corps in North Africa and Sicily. He became a temporary lieutenant general in June of that year, the three-star grade reflected by this figure’s helmet. His career connected combat formations with the larger headquarters responsible for coordinating their operations.
Bradley took command of First Army in 1943 as preparations developed for the Allied return to northwestern Europe. During June and July 1944 he led that army through the Normandy campaign, including the difficult fighting beyond the invasion beaches. He later commanded the 12th Army Group as American forces advanced across Western Europe. These responsibilities involved planning, supplies and cooperation between numerous corps and divisions, as well as decisions made under battlefield pressure.
The helmet, field clothing and portrait tile make this figure suitable for a WWII command-post or historical leadership display. Bradley was promoted to general in March 1945 and to General of the Army in September 1950. This three-star presentation represents his earlier wartime lieutenant-general identity, rather than the later five-star rank for which he is also remembered.
