• Background: The 1916 Battle of the Somme was a defining and tragic offensive for the British Expeditionary Force (BEF). Composed heavily of civilian volunteers from “Kitchener’s New Army,” these troops faced brutal trench warfare, driving rain, and lethal machine-gun fire. This squad beautifully captures the grim reality of the Western Front, featuring historically accurate Brodie helmets (and one peaked cap), specialized combat webbing, and thick, realistic trench mud printed across their boots and puttees (leg wraps).

Command & Medical Support

• The Officer (Bottom Left): Identifiable by his khaki peaked cap and visible shirt and tie beneath his tunic. He is equipped with a Sam Browne leather belt and a pistol holster. Historically, junior officers suffered catastrophic casualty rates, as they were expected to lead charges “over the top” into No Man’s Land armed only with sidearms and whistles.

• The Medic (Bottom Center): This Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) orderly is marked by a prominent Red Cross on his helmet and white armband. He wears a diagonal strap for a medical satchel. Under the Geneva Convention, these unarmed heroes braved intense artillery fire to retrieve the wounded.
