Historical Background
General Wang Mingzhang (1893–1938) was a highly respected commander in the Chinese National Revolutionary Army, leading the 122nd Division of the 41st Army. He is most famous for his heroic leadership during the crucial Battle of Xuzhou, specifically the defense of Tengxian (Teng County) in March 1938. Tasked with delaying the massive Japanese advance to allow Chinese forces to consolidate at Taierzhuang, General Wang and his desperately outnumbered and outgunned Sichuan troops fought a brutal, multi-day urban defense against heavy artillery and tank assaults. General Wang refused to retreat, fighting alongside his men in street-to-street combat until he was mortally wounded in action. His sacrifice at Tengxian bought the necessary time for the NRA to secure a major, morale-boosting victory at the subsequent Battle of Taierzhuang. He was posthumously promoted to full General for his ultimate sacrifice.
