Historical / Thematic Background
Mitsuru Ushijima commanded the Japanese 32nd Army during the Okinawa campaign of 1945. The Allied assault began on 1 April and continued through June in the closing months of the Pacific war. Okinawa’s airfields and position near Japan gave the island strategic importance, while its populated landscape made the battle devastating for civilians as well as military personnel.
The Japanese defense was organized around inland fortified positions, including the Shuri Line. Caves, underground shelters and successive defensive areas helped sustain resistance against Allied ground forces. Ushijima’s command therefore belongs to the history of large-scale defensive operations on an inhabited island, a setting different from the naval carrier battles associated with the other senior officers in this collection.
This miniature uses an olive officer’s uniform, a peaked cap and tall dark boot printing to present that command theme. The relatively simple tunic outline distinguishes it from Kuribayashi’s cord-and-belt design, and both contrast with the white and blue naval uniforms. It is a collectible interpretation of a named commander, suitable for an educational campaign display or a broader study of wartime leadership. Okinawa’s severe civilian and military losses remain an essential part of the campaign’s historical setting.
