Historical Background
During World War I, the machine gun—most notably the German MG 08 (Maschinengewehr 08)—dominated the battlefield, capable of mowing down lines of advancing infantry. Because of their devastating effectiveness, machine gun crews were primary targets for enemy artillery shrapnel and Allied snipers.
To protect these highly valuable soldiers, the German military introduced heavy steel body armor in 1916, officially known as the Grabenpanzer or Sappenpanzer (Trench Armor). This armor consisted of a solid breastplate and three articulated lower plates to protect the groin and abdomen.
However, the armor was incredibly heavy, weighing up to 24 pounds (11 kg). Because it severely restricted movement and was too exhausting to wear while charging across No Man’s Land, it was almost exclusively issued to troops operating in static, defensive positions. Sentries, snipers, and machine gunners (as represented by this figure) wore this armor while holding the line, allowing them to withstand glancing sniper fire and shrapnel blasts while manning their heavy weapons.
