Historical Background
Agustín Muñoz Grandes (January 27, 1896 – July 11, 1970) was a prominent Spanish general. Following the Spanish Civil War, dictator Francisco Franco sought to return the favor for Nazi Germany’s prior assistance by sending a unit of Spanish volunteers to fight against the Soviet Union on the Eastern Front. However, to maintain neutrality with the Western Allies, it was strictly agreed that this unit would only fight against Soviet forces.
This volunteer force became famously known as the Blue Division (División Azul), which was officially integrated into the German military as the 250th Infantry Division. In 1941, General Muñoz Grandes was given command of this unique unit. Under his leadership, the Spanish troops endured the brutal Russian winter and fought tenaciously near the Volkhov River and Leningrad.
Because of his leadership, Muñoz Grandes was personally decorated by Adolf Hitler with the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross, to which the Oak Leaves were later added. He was eventually recalled to Spain in December 1942, at which point Emilio Esteban Infantes took over command of the division on the Eastern Front.
