Historical Background
During World War II, the Spanish Blue Division (División Azul), officially designated as the 250th Infantry Division of the German Wehrmacht, was composed of approximately 47,000 Spanish volunteers who fought on the Eastern Front against Soviet forces.
In the defense tactics of the Wehrmacht infantry squad, the machine gunner (Maschinengewehrschütze) served as the tactical backbone of the unit. Armed with the high-rate-of-fire MG 34 or MG 42 (nicknamed “Hitler’s Buzzsaw”), machine gunners provided suppressive firepower critical for both defensive holds and offensive counter-attacks.
Spanish machine gunners played a legendary role during defensive actions on the Eastern Front, most notably at the Battle of Krasny Bor (February 1943). Outnumbered nearly six-to-one by Soviet Red Army forces attempting to lift the Siege of Leningrad, Spanish machine-gun crews held their ground amidst heavy artillery bombardment and wave attacks, inflicting massive casualties and preventing a total breakthrough of their defensive sector despite suffering tremendous casualties themselves.
