Historical Background
Commander Joseph Rochefort (1900–1976) was a major figure in the Pacific War, commanding Station HYPO, the US Navy’s cryptographic and radio intelligence unit based in the “Dungeon” at Pearl Harbor. In the spring of 1942, Rochefort and his exhausted team of codebreakers worked around the clock to decipher the Japanese Imperial Navy’s complex JN-25 code. Rochefort successfully deduced that the Japanese target code-named “AF” was the Midway Atoll. To confirm this, he orchestrated a brilliant ruse, having Midway broadcast a fake message in the clear about a broken water distillation plant. When Japanese communications intercepted and reported that “AF is short of water,” Rochefort had the definitive proof he needed. This unparalleled intelligence allowed Admiral Chester Nimitz to perfectly position his aircraft carriers to ambush the Japanese fleet, resulting in the Battle of Midway—one of the most decisive and war-altering naval victories in history.
