Historical / Thematic Background
Zhang Zuolin (1875–1928), also written Chang Tso-lin, was a Chinese military leader whose power was centered in the northeast. He led the Fengtian, or Mukden, group, one of the regional forces competing to shape the early Republic. His career links the history of Manchuria with the struggles for control of Beijing during the 1920s.
In 1927, Zhang headed the Ankuochun, a northern coalition that brought together Fengtian troops, forces from Zhili and Shandong, and the reorganized army of Sun Chuanfang. This was a period of military campaigning, negotiations and shifting alliances, as rival commanders and the Nationalist movement sought political authority. On 18 June 1927, Zhang became Generalissimo of the Army and Navy of the Republic of China in Beijing, concentrating government and military power in his administration.
The renewed Northern Expedition in 1928 made his position in Beijing untenable. He withdrew toward his northeastern base, but a bomb struck his train near Mukden, now Shenyang, on 4 June. The assassination was carried out by soldiers of Japan’s Kwantung Army. His son Zhang Xueliang then succeeded him in the northeast.
This figure interprets Zhang as a commander through a khaki uniform, prominent medal decorations and a moustached face. The shoulder details, buttoned tunic and printed black boots give the miniature a distinctive Republican-era command portrait for a historical display.
