This collector’s set brings together a highly detailed squad of Tsarist Russian soldiers, perfectly capturing the stark contrast between the heavily burdened enlisted conscripts and the aristocratic officer class during the freezing campaigns of the Eastern Front.

Character Identification, Description, and Historical Context

All four figures are crowned with the iconic grey Papakha (traditional wool/fur hat) featuring the printed Imperial Russian cockade.

1. Infantry Private Type D (Far Left)

• Identification & Description: A young enlisted rifleman featuring a clean-shaven face. He is bundled in the standard grey Shinel (heavy wool greatcoat) and wears a brown leather belt fastened by a brass Imperial double-headed eagle buckle. Flanking the buckle are two leather ammunition pouches. Thick printed snow clings to his black marching boots.

• Historical Background: Millions of young peasant conscripts were drafted into the Tsar’s army. Enduring severe supply shortages, their coarse wool greatcoats and Papakha hats were their primary defense against the deadly Russian winter while they wielded their Mosin-Nagant rifles.
