Historical / Thematic Background
Chuichi Nagumo commanded the Japanese carrier force that attacked Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941. The operation had been planned under Combined Fleet commander Isoroku Yamamoto. Nagumo’s place in the early Pacific war is therefore closely linked to the practical command of carrier striking forces, rather than the broader fleet-level planning role represented by Yamamoto.
At Midway in June 1942, Nagumo again commanded Japan’s carrier striking force. The battle involved reconnaissance, the preparation of aircraft strikes and the rapidly changing threat posed by opposing carriers. Japan’s carrier losses made the encounter a major turning point. Comparing the two naval leaders helps explain how a campaign plan and its execution at sea could involve different commanders and different levels of responsibility.
This miniature presents Nagumo in dark blue naval dress, with a peaked cap, white hands and restrained face printing. The color makes him easy to distinguish from Yamamoto’s white uniform and the two olive army figures. It suits a naval command collection or a display exploring the aircraft-carrier era of the Pacific war. The simplified outfit is a collectible interpretation of the historical identity; the figure’s visible details should not be treated as proof of a particular shipboard occasion or a complete record of his decorations.
