Detailed Character Identification, Description, and Historical Background
Character Identification
A Roman-themed trumpeter with a white-gray wolf headdress, curved horn and red round shield.
Detailed Character Description
A gray helmet sits beneath the white-gray wolf headdress. Blue eyes and a brown beard distinguish the face, above mail-patterned armor, a decorated belt and pale-colored legs. The gold-colored curved horn has a broad bell and a cross-braced outline. The red round shield carries gold-colored laurel leaves and geometric ornaments. A red cape and short sword complete the equipment package.
Historical / Thematic Background
Roman military musicians helped communicate orders as well as accompany formal occasions. A player of the large curved cornu was known as a cornicen. Surviving Roman imagery shows the instrument carried with its bell raised, and museum collections preserve reconstructions based on archaeological finds. The miniature’s curved, cross-braced horn evokes that recognizable instrument rather than a modern straight trumpet.
Musicians belonged to the broader organization of the army alongside officers, standard bearers and fighting troops. Ancient depictions include a horn player with a round shield, while scenes of ceremonial music also appear in Roman art. These different settings make a musician a useful subject for an army display: the character represents communication and ceremony in addition to the weapons carried by ordinary infantry. The model is a stylized collectible rather than an exact reconstruction of one dated uniform.
The white-gray wolf headdress, mail-patterned body, red cape and decorated round shield give this trumpeter a distinct appearance beside the companion Signifer and Aquilifer. Those companions carry standards; this figure carries the musical instrument. Its shield decoration and animal headdress do not establish a particular legion, personal identity or battle. The individual package includes the horn, shield, cape and short sword, allowing the same figure to be displayed with its full equipment.
Included Contents
One complete trumpeter figure with the pictured helmet and wolf headdress, curved horn, red-and-gold round shield, red cape and one short sword.
