Historical / Thematic Background
This collection brings together two institutions of wartime Italy through three costume designs: the monarchy represented by Victor Emmanuel III and the Fascist dictatorship represented by Benito Mussolini. The king appointed Mussolini prime minister in 1922 and dismissed him in 1943. Their relationship belongs to the political history of Italy’s Fascist period and its wartime crisis.
The three figures depict two people. Victor Emmanuel III appears twice: once in a decorated blue-sash dress uniform and once in a gray uniform crossed by a brown strap. The first version stresses royal ceremony through its pale sash and elaborate printed decorations; the second uses pockets, gloves and equipment straps for a more restrained appearance. Mussolini’s gray-uniform figure adds a third distinct costume and face design.
Together they support a historical character display or a comparison of political and military presentation. The collection is not an infantry squad and does not represent three different historical leaders. Its interest lies in the contrast between offices and outfits within the same national setting, allowing the figures to be displayed with clear historical context rather than as an invented military formation.
