Historical / Thematic Background
Victor Emmanuel III occupied Italy’s throne during the rise of Fascism and the Second World War. In 1922 he appointed Benito Mussolini prime minister. The monarchy continued alongside the dictatorship, leaving the king closely connected to the political choices of that period. In July 1943 he dismissed Mussolini as the regime’s position collapsed.
The blue sash gives this interpretation a formal, ceremonial emphasis. Its printed decorations, cords, light gloves and carefully arranged tunic create the appearance of a royal portrait or official occasion. The pale diagonal band is also the simplest way to distinguish it from the brown-strap version of the same king. These miniature details represent the visual language of authority and ceremony; they do not specify a particular award ceremony or a precisely dated photograph.
For a historical display, the figure works as a named political and royal subject within an Italian wartime setting. Placing it beside the alternative uniform version allows the contrast between ceremonial presentation and a more restrained military appearance to be seen. Together with other contemporary figures, it can support a display about the institutions and personalities involved in Italy’s difficult wartime history.
