Detailed Character Identification, Description, and Historical Background

Character Identification

A brown German First World War-themed cavalry horse brick figure equipped with the pictured pale gas mask and black saddle, over a printed saddlecloth design.

Detailed Character Description

A pale ribbed gas-mask piece covers the horse’s muzzle. The brown horse retains printed bridle lines and small ring details, a black mane and tail, and dark hoof sections. Tan printed saddlecloth panels sit under the fitted black saddle, with a brown pouch and strap artwork visible at the side. The mask and saddle are pictured as fitted equipment; pouch and blanket illustrations remain printed design details.

Historical / Thematic Background

The First World War placed military horses in a battlefield environment shaped by artillery, disrupted supply routes and chemical warfare. Horses continued to perform cavalry and transport roles, so protecting them was part of maintaining an army’s ability to move people and equipment. Their service linked mounted troops with the less visible work of supply and support.

Equine gas masks were developed during the war because horses, like soldiers, could be harmed by battlefield gases. The Science Museum Group preserves a German-made First World War horse mask designed to cover the animal’s nose and mouth. Such equipment illustrates how the demands of industrial warfare extended protective measures beyond the soldiers themselves.

This miniature uses a pale muzzle covering to give the horse a recognizable gas-protection theme. Its black saddle and tan printed saddlecloth retain the cavalry-display character, while pouch and strap illustrations add field-equipment detail. Together these features make it suitable for a First World War military camp, horse-care scene or historical collection. It is a decorative brick-scale interpretation of the subject, supplied as one horse with its pictured mask and saddle; a mounted soldier or surrounding scene is not part of the package.
