Detailed Character Identification, Description, and Historical Background
Character Identification
An unnamed Chinese Republican-era rifleman character. The supplier’s role label and the figure’s printed carrying arrangement distinguish this member within the four-soldier National Revolutionary Army uniform theme.
Detailed Character Description
A broad light khaki diagonal carrying item crosses the olive torso, with dark hanging-gear shapes and straps at either side. Pocket and collar lines remain visible around the equipment artwork. The face has dark angled brows, a small closed mouth, cheek marks and a chinstrap tied or fastened beneath the chin. Olive shorts, exposed-knee-colored bands and wrapped puttees continue down to flesh-colored toe areas with dark outlines. The sleeve bears a dark patch with its original light emblem. A loose green helmet is shown beside the figure.
Includes one complete printed brick figure and one loose green helmet. The straps, pouches and other flat equipment details are printed on the figure. No loose firearm or scenery is included.
Historical / Thematic Background
The National Government’s army uniform regulations promulgated in January 1936 describe identification labels showing a soldier’s affiliation, rank, duty and name. Their illustrated appendix includes divided rectangular chest-label layouts with a narrow rank strip. The small label printed on this toy’s tunic follows that period visual language, supporting its Chinese Republican-era military theme.
A documented photograph of a Nationalist soldier in Shanghai in 1937 also shows the German-style M1935 steel helmet used by Chinese troops. The separate green toy helmet, field tunic and wrapped lower legs fit that wider 1930s–1940s setting. These comparisons support a uniform-theme interpretation; the miniature does not establish a particular battlefield, issue year or named soldier.
The broad diagonal printed carrying item gives the rifleman the most asymmetric torso arrangement in the collection. Its smaller dark equipment details and distinctive lower-leg printing allow the design to be read separately from the other three infantry roles.
The supplier calls this series “2D,” but a precise division or other numbered unit has not been independently established. The sleeve emblem is retained as part of the original print without expanding that label into a historical unit claim. The figure suits a Chinese Republican-era infantry display, where its actual uniform, expression and printed carrying equipment can be compared with the other designs.
