Detailed Character Identification, Description, and Historical Background
Character Identification
A Roman auxiliary archer holding a brown bow and a yellow oval shield. The figure wears a gold-coloured helmet and grey mail-style armour, with a dark green cape among its matching supplied equipment.
Detailed Character Description
The cheek-guarded helmet frames a face with green eyes and a reddish-brown moustache and chin-line design. The removable grey torso armour has repeated mail-like rows and shoulder fastenings. The clothing beneath it is muted green-grey, with a dark green neck-scarf print, belt details and blue-brown lower-leg bands.
The tall brown bow has curved limbs and a straight inner string-like section. The yellow shield has a grey border, a blue-ringed central boss, a green wreath tied with a red ribbon and blue crescent motifs above and below. The separately displayed dark green cape belongs to the same included figure package.
The supplied pictures show one bow but do not show a separate arrow or quiver. The equipment layout presents the same figure and its included parts, not additional soldiers.
Included: One auxiliary archer figure with gold-coloured helmet; One grey mail-style torso-armour piece; One dark green cape; One brown bow; One yellow decorated oval shield.
Historical / Thematic Background
Archery formed part of the range of skills within the Roman military. The Antonine Wall heritage guide records bows among auxiliary weapons and documents a unit of archers in Roman Britain. This provides historical context for a bow-equipped auxiliary character, without identifying this miniature with that particular unit or its place of recruitment.
Material and sculptural evidence also helps historians recognize Roman archers. A Housesteads tombstone discussed in Newcastle University’s artefact resource depicts a soldier holding a bow and wearing military equipment. The miniature uses a different stylized outfit, but shares the simple visual idea that a carried bow can communicate a soldier’s specialist role.
The bright yellow shield makes this version especially easy to distinguish in a group. Its green wreath and red ribbon echo the dark green cape and scarf colour, while the gold-coloured helmet and grey armour link it visually to the other auxiliaries. The open arrangement of the bow contrasts with their solid sword and spear shapes.
The figure suits a Roman-inspired camp, fort wall or troop-gathering scene. It is presented as a generic auxiliary archer with the pictured bow and shield; the design does not establish a named person, a specific historical regiment or an exact battlefield setting.
