Detailed Character Identification, Description, and Historical Background
Collection Identification
Four complete Roman-themed foot soldiers: one legionary with a compact handheld ballista-like prop, one auxiliary swordsman, one auxiliary archer and one auxiliary spearman.
Individual Figure Identification, Description, and Context
1. Ancient Roman Legionary with Mobile Ballista
A Roman legionary figure with a grey helmet, segmented-style body armour and a red rectangular shield. The compact “Mobile Ballista” accessory is shown held in one hand: this is a stylized crossbow-like toy prop, not a wheeled siege engine.
The grey helmet has a broad rim, raised crown details and cheek guards framing a serious printed face. The removable grey torso armour uses horizontal bands, clasps and shoulder plates to suggest segmented armour. Beneath it, the figure has a red tunic, dark strap and belt printing, a studded apron design and brown sandal-like lower-leg details.
A brown studded waist-armour piece and a separate red waist/skirt piece build out the equipped appearance. A tan cape is shown among the matching supplied parts. The large red shield has a gold-coloured border, a round central boss, wing motifs and angular lightning-like decoration.
The brown crossbow-like prop has a compact framed bow shape and a central grey tip detail. It is presented as an included handheld accessory; the pictures do not show wheels, a carriage or a separate artillery crew.
Collection context: Its grey segmented-style armour and rectangular red shield distinguish this member from the three mail-armoured auxiliaries. The compact framed weapon gives the collection a separate toy artillery theme.
2. Ancient Roman Auxiliary Swordsman with Gladius
A Roman auxiliary swordsman carrying a short gladius-style sword and a blue oval shield. A gold-coloured helmet and grey mail-style armour define the equipped figure, with a grey cape supplied in the matching equipment layout.
The helmet has a broad rim, raised crown details and cheek guards. The printed face has blue eyes, a light-coloured moustache and a tense open-mouth expression. The removable grey torso piece represents a mail shirt with repeated ring-like rows and shoulder fastenings.
The tan outfit beneath the armour carries a dark neck cord, belt and apron printing, with blue band details around the waist and brown sandal-like marks on the lower legs. The gladius-style accessory has a short grey pointed blade, a small guard and a brown grip.
The blue oval shield has a grey outer edge, an orange-brown border, a central round boss, golden leaf motifs, crescent shapes and a white central strip. The separate grey cape belongs to this same figure’s included equipment.
Collection context: This is the collection’s close-combat sword bearer. Its blue oval shield, grey cape and tan clothing set it apart from the archer and spearman, even though all three share the auxiliary armour style.
3. Ancient Roman Auxiliary Archer
A Roman auxiliary archer holding a brown bow and a yellow oval shield. The figure wears a gold-coloured helmet and grey mail-style armour, with a dark green cape among its matching supplied equipment.
The cheek-guarded helmet frames a face with green eyes and a reddish-brown moustache and chin-line design. The removable grey torso armour has repeated mail-like rows and shoulder fastenings. The clothing beneath it is muted green-grey, with a dark green neck-scarf print, belt details and blue-brown lower-leg bands.
The tall brown bow has curved limbs and a straight inner string-like section. The yellow shield has a grey border, a blue-ringed central boss, a green wreath tied with a red ribbon and blue crescent motifs above and below. The separately displayed dark green cape belongs to the same included figure package.
The supplied pictures show one bow but do not show a separate arrow or quiver. The equipment layout presents the same figure and its included parts, not additional soldiers.
Collection context: The brown bow identifies the collection’s archery theme. Its yellow shield, green wreath, dark green cape and moustached face give it an individual appearance beside the two other auxiliaries.
4. Ancient Roman Auxiliary Spearman
A bearded Roman auxiliary spearman with a tall brown-shafted spear and a green oval shield. A gold-coloured helmet and grey mail-style armour form the equipped appearance, accompanied by an orange cape.
The gold-coloured helmet has a broad rim, raised crown details and cheek guards around a black-bearded face. The removable grey armour piece has a repeated mail-like pattern and shoulder fastenings. Beneath it are pale clothing, a light neck-scarf print, a dark belt and striped sandal-like lower-leg details.
The spear rises well above the figure. It has a brown shaft, a grey pointed head and a broad yellow fitting below the tip. The green oval shield has a grey edge, gold-coloured wings and angular decoration, a round central boss, a white vertical strip and small white flower-like motifs.
An orange cape is shown as part of the matching equipment display. That layout shows the same soldier and its included armour, shield and weapon; the loose parts do not represent additional figures.
Collection context: The spear gives this member the collection’s tallest weapon silhouette. Its green shield, pale clothes, dark beard and orange cape distinguish it from the archer and swordsman.
Included Contents
Four human figures, one of each design described above. Each includes its pictured helmet, torso armour, cape, shield and corresponding weapon. The legionary additionally has the pictured brown waist-armour and red waist/skirt pieces. The capes are tan for the legionary, grey for the swordsman, dark green for the archer and orange for the spearman.
The archer has the pictured bow; no separate arrow or quiver is shown. The legionary’s compact ballista-like prop is handheld, with no wheeled carriage shown. Equipment layouts show the same four designs and their parts, not extra figures.
Historical / Thematic Background
This four-figure group brings together a legionary design and three auxiliary roles. English Heritage describes the legions and auxiliaries as complementary parts of the Roman imperial army. The collection uses that broad distinction through one figure in segmented-style armour with a rectangular shield and three in mail-style armour with oval shields.
Military life involved more than weapons and battle formations. National Museums Scotland explains the importance of food supply, transport, craft work and trade around Roman garrisons. A small group like this can therefore form the centre of a camp or fort scene, with the builder adding an imagined daily setting around its four characters.
The colours and equipment make the members easy to tell apart. Red and tan accompany the legionary, the swordsman carries a blue shield and grey cape, the archer pairs yellow and dark green, and the spearman combines a green shield with an orange cape. Each has its own complete set of pictured equipment.
The collection is a coordinated selection of toy soldiers, not a complete historical unit or a reconstruction of a named campaign. Its framed ballista-like accessory is a stylized handheld prop. Together with the sword, bow and spear, it introduces several Roman military themes while leaving the setting open to the builder’s interpretation.
