Detailed Character Identification, Description, and Historical Background
Character Identification
A Roman auxiliary swordsman carrying a short gladius-style sword and a blue oval shield. A gold-coloured helmet and grey mail-style armour define the equipped figure, with a grey cape supplied in the matching equipment layout.
Detailed Character Description
The helmet has a broad rim, raised crown details and cheek guards. The printed face has blue eyes, a light-coloured moustache and a tense open-mouth expression. The removable grey torso piece represents a mail shirt with repeated ring-like rows and shoulder fastenings.
The tan outfit beneath the armour carries a dark neck cord, belt and apron printing, with blue band details around the waist and brown sandal-like marks on the lower legs. The gladius-style accessory has a short grey pointed blade, a small guard and a brown grip.
The blue oval shield has a grey outer edge, an orange-brown border, a central round boss, golden leaf motifs, crescent shapes and a white central strip. The separate grey cape belongs to this same figure’s included equipment.
Included: One auxiliary swordsman figure with gold-coloured helmet; One grey mail-style torso-armour piece; One grey cape; One grey gladius-style sword with brown grip; One blue decorated oval shield.
Historical / Thematic Background
The gladius is one of the most recognizable weapons associated with Roman soldiers. The Royal Armouries identifies it as a short Roman sword and preserves an example in its collection. The compact pointed blade supplied with this miniature follows that broad visual theme, rather than representing a verified archaeological sword pattern.
Auxiliary units supported the legions and included soldiers with varied weapons and skills. The Antonine Wall heritage guide describes auxiliary equipment such as helmets, oval shields and mail protection. These forms help explain the model’s combination of a rounded shield and a shirt-like armour surface, without making its colours proof of a particular cohort.
The blue shield is the strongest identifying feature of this version. Golden leaves and crescent shapes create a bright contrast against the grey armour, while the tan clothing and printed belt add detail beneath the removable torso piece. The grey cape gives the equipped character a restrained companion colour.
This swordsman can join a Roman-inspired gate guard, a camp scene or a mixed infantry group. Its short blade offers a different equipment theme from the bow, spear and framed ballista-like prop in the same collection. The figure remains a generic auxiliary character, with no named individual or battle attached to its design.
